Google Cloud adds OpenAI models alongside Gemini and Claude

GPT and Codex are coming to Google Cloud, starting with a private enterprise preview. Customers will be able to buy OpenAI models using existing cloud spending commitments.

Google Cloud is adding OpenAI’s frontier models and Codex, putting GPT alongside Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude on the same cloud platform. For businesses already keeping their data and applications with Google, that opens another route to OpenAI without taking the work elsewhere. 1 2

The first models are GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. They are rolling out in private preview to selected enterprise customers now. OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks. 1 2

Google gets to sell its rivals, too

Claude is already part of that mix. Just yesterday, Google announced Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 in Antigravity for its cloud customers. OpenAI models in Antigravity are still coming soon, but the direction is clear: Google wants teams to choose among the major model families while staying on its platform. 3

OpenAI purchases will go through Model Garden and Google Cloud Marketplace, appear on the Google Cloud invoice and draw down existing cloud spending commitments. That matters to companies which have already agreed to spend with Google: trying a different model can fit into the budget and purchasing relationship they already have. 1 2

There is an obvious trade-off for Google. Gemini has to compete with OpenAI’s models right next to it, but Google can still win the cloud business when a customer chooses GPT. Axios describes the agreement as another step toward model distribution following the applications and data that enterprises already run. 4

Codex is part of the deal

Google says preview customers can use its APIs and connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to the Gemini platform for inference. The partnership therefore covers a way to bring existing coding workflows onto Google Cloud, as well as access to the models themselves. 1

Google also says OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure, with its identity, auditing and data-governance controls. Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute are listed as coming soon. 1

For OpenAI, this follows its expansion onto AWS earlier this year. Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner, as OpenAI’s announcement explicitly notes. 4 2
