ChatGPT and Codex are getting a shared token-based allowance from December. OpenAI’s updated help page names Plus, Pro and Business as the affected plans. 1

The important exception is Instant chat, which OpenAI says will stay outside that allowance. For the rest, consumption will vary with the model and task, rather than every request costing the same amount. 1

That is the change we flagged in our post earlier today. Our worry is straightforward: how much room will be left for ChatGPT after a heavy Codex session? A shared pool could be perfectly workable, but it needs to be generous enough that switching between the two does not become a budgeting exercise.

OpenAI says the combined balance and reset time will appear in Settings → Usage. If you run out, the options are to wait, upgrade or buy credits for eligible features. OpenAI expects most users will not need to wait for resets more often than they do now. 1

The page gives no exact token allowance or specific December start date. That leaves the part we most want to know unanswered: whether this feels like a simpler subscription or less headroom for people who use both heavily.
